UP MAGAZINE: Upper and Lowercase: The Letter Speaks

A historic convergence transpired this past Thursday at Studio 6 Gallery on Rivington Street with the opening of Upper and Lowercase. Three kings of the letter: BANDO, T-KID 170, and SHOE merged in the cradle of graffiti culture for a show that honored their irreplaceable contribution to concrete authorship. Together and independently, these vanguards shaped and propelled the evolution of urban text through their own distinctions and innovations, transforming letters into written art.

I first noticed these attributes around the pool table at Studio6 when he, in a very gentlemanly manner, sent me and my womanly pool shark bravado packing in a game that felt more like a high stakes chess match than a recreational Tuesday evening activity. As I became more aware of his work, that same essence of unmistakable assurance and calculation was highly visible in the depths of his visual language. Something he established through consistent practice and discernment.

NEW YORK, NY - During the opening of Con$umr’s solo exhibition, an unexpected visitor walked in off the street. It was Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter and actress Jill Scott. After meeting Con$umr and viewing the exhibition, Scott purchased one of his signature Love Spray woodcuts, adding to her personal art collection.
